Ship Ballast Water Treatment

Abstract: Ships use ballast water to ensure their buoyancy and stability. A significant amount of them is transported in various water basins of the World Ocean. Thus, together with ballast water, many microorganisms, phytoplankton and zooplankton are transported. The constant increase in the number of ships in the World Merchant Navy increases the risk of the spread of these invasive species in the local aquatic environment. This led to the decision of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to legalize the contr… Show more

“…Studies show that fatigue and burnout, which occur under such working conditions, negatively affect mental health ( 25 , 86 , 87 ). Dachev and Lazarov further showed that operation of specific maritime devices, the risk of falling into the sea, vibrations, confined spaces, and the natural microclimate onboard ships can cause sailors to experience a variety of distressing and mental health conditions ( 88 ). Furthermore, Kirkby’s research on the psychological dangers of living and working under the isolating conditions of a ship supports the findings of this study ( 89 ).…”

“…Ballast water disposal into the sea will cause poisoning for marine life and other microorganisms. This causes various problems, such as changes in growth patterns, hormonal cycle damage, birth defects, decreased immune system, causes cancer, tumors and genetic disorders or even death if consumed by humans (Dachev et al, 2021;Lakshmi et al, 2021;Outinen et al, 2021).…”

“…The spatially enclosed nature of maritime work is also an issue, with crews being dispatched for long periods of time to work on ships far from land and lacking contact with the outside world (Shan & Neis, 2020). Difficulties in communication on board ships, lack of internet and communication signals, coupled with the long drifting time of the ship, leaves the crew working in a limited space and social context with potential trauma and psychological stress (Dachev & Lazarov, 2019).…”

“…Staying on board for long periods of time causes them to be unable to maintain a balance with their families, to be closely connected to the rapid developments in the outside world, and to adapt to the rhythm and ways of life on land (Jiang et al, 2018;Torabi et al, 2021). Crew members' work time contracts make it difficult for them to adjust to normal life ashore and may lead to health and mental disorders (Dachev & Lazarov, 2019).…”
