SHM System and a FEM Model-Based Force Analysis Assessment in Stay Cables

Abstract: The Rędziński Bridge in Wrocław is the biggest Polish concrete cable-stayed bridge. It is equipped with a large structural health monitoring (SHM) system which has been collecting the measured data since the bridge opening in the year 2011. This paper presents a comparison between the measured data and the finite element method (FEM) calculations, while taking into account 7 years of data collection and analyses. The first part of this paper concerns the SHM application. In the next part, which contains compar… Show more

“…It should be noted that when MEMS accelerometers reach their saturation level (get overloaded) [ 68 ], they are not able to measure the magnitude of the impact anymore [ 69 ]. In fact, LARA, unlike piezoelectric solutions, does not require a parametric analysis as it does not experience a drift after saturation [ 21 ]. More information about the saturation of MEMS accelerometers can be found in [ 68 ].…”

“…On the one hand, some environmental elements (such as temperature or humidity) change very slowly, so they can be considered to perform either as quasi-static or static [ 17 , 18 ]. On the contrary, some events (such as traffic-induced vibrations, ambient activities, and waves from seismic activities) are considered dynamic because their changing rate is significantly affected by the time [ 19 , 20 , 21 ].…”

“…Appropriate research has been done using model-based SHM on bridges. It should be noted that this technique has not only been used in real studies but also works in the lab [71,72]. Despite its many benefits, the Model-driven SHM has certain drawbacks as well.…”

“…Currently, the fatigue assessment and life prediction methods of the stay cables can be generally classifed into two categories: datadriven methods and fnite element model-based methods. Data-driven methods use the data processing methods such as data statistics and data mining to directly assess the condition of the diagonal cable based on the monitoring responses [23,[28][29][30][31]. Unlike the data-driven method, the fnite element model-based approach uses fnite element analysis to indirectly obtain the tension force of cables under diferent loading conditions, and then perform condition assessment and life prediction of the stay cable using suitable fatigue life models [28,[32][33][34].…”
