Abstract: In this article, we respond to DeKeseredy and Schwartz's (2013) article, "Confronting Progressive Retreatism and Minimalism: The Role of a New Left Realist Approach." In that 2013 piece, the authors contend that many critical scholars are "retreating" from the crucial challenges of our time, and that many more are "minimizing" their critique and truncating the breadth of their critical scholarship. Given the tragedies that await us in the near future, we argue that it is vital that critical criminologists reco… Show more

“…Ultra-realism emphasizes the importance of contextual conditions, history, political economy and structural changes (Winlow and Hall 2019). To tackle the threat of female economic impendence, a physical threat is used to establish dominance (Ellis, 2017).…”

“…Due to the wide scale of ultra-realism, only specific aspects of ultra-realism will be utilised, namely special liberty (Hall, 2012) and benign neglect (Treadwell et al, 2020). Neoliberalism, a by-product of capitalism, was established in Britain in the 1970s (Hall and Winlow, 2019). The change of political economy eradicated traditional cultures into the form of consumerism (Leitner et al, 2007;Hall and Winlow, 2015).…”

“…These include perpetrators threatening and murdering potential whistle-blowers or perpetuating unsafe working conditions in the name of lowering the production costs that then lead to worker injuries and deaths. Within criminology, studies have underscored physical, social, and economic harms caused by crimes of the powerful perpetrated by people in positions of trust, whether in the private sector or those in government working to regulate the financial industry, while also recognizing the lack of social concern for them relative to other types of crime (Hall & Winlow, 2015 ; Kotzé, 2019 ; Kauzarlich & Rothe, 2014 ; Reiman & Leighton, 2016 ; Rothe & Kauzlarich, 2016 ; Winlow and Hall, 2019 ). Overall, incidents of financial crime are normalized as part of the necessary workings of the economic system.…”
