Shock‐ and Energy‐Absorption Capability of Cold‐Programmable Shape Memory Polymers

Abstract: In this work, the shock‐ and energy‐absorption capability of cold‐programmable shape memory polymers is evaluated. To this end, thin safety lines are prepared from different materials (critically cross‐linked syndiotactic polypropylene, shape memory natural rubber, natural rubber, and Dyneema) and tested by falling weight experiments to determine characteristic physical quantities such as maximum impact force, maximum jerk (first derivative of the deceleration), and energy absorption capability.
