Short and Longer Term Effects of Musical Intervention in Severe Alzheimer's Disease

Abstract: in this study, we examined short and longer term effects of musical and cooking interventions on emotional well-being of severe Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. These two pleasurable activities (i.e., listening to music, tasting sweets) that were collectively performed (i.e., playing music together, collaborative preparation of a cake) were compared in two groups of matched patients with AD (N = 14). Each intervention lasted four weeks (two sessions per week) and their effects were regularly assessed up to f… Show more

“…However, all participants reported that a non-pharmacological intervention should be tried in the first instance, reflecting an espoused belief or value [ 19 ] that was not always borne out in practice (level 2). Research in care homes has shown that cooking and music therapy have a beneficial effect on residents with dementia and help with decreasing the severity of behavioural disorders and caregiver distress [ 34 ]. “…Eleven studies assessed the effects of music and MT on dementia [60][61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69][70] . Eight studies employed a relational approach [60][61][63][64][65][68][69][70] based either on active or receptive techniques or a combination of both of them.…”

“…Eight studies employed a relational approach [60][61][63][64][65][68][69][70] based either on active or receptive techniques or a combination of both of them. Two studies concerned music listening interventions [62,67] and one study adopted a rehabilitative approach [66] .…”

“…The absence of a nonmusic or another intervention group to control for changes due to patients’ stimulation (and to the social impact of group activities) also limits the conclusion about the specific impact of a music intervention. Moreover, there is virtually no experimental research about the potential long‐term effects of music‐based activities in PWD and their caregivers (except for three recent studies). Thus, there is an urgent need to go beyond intuitions and investigate the efficiency of music‐based intervention in the treatment of PWD more rigorously with adequate experimental methodology.…”
