Short- and Mid-term Outcomes of Sleeve Gastrectomy for Morbid Obesity: The Experience of the Spanish National Registry

“…The FTS in the LSG group was somewhat lower due to three outliers (2 patients who experienced anorexia nervosa after LSG and 1 patient who experienced a major depression). Most of the patients reported good alimentary comfort, and mainly red beef was poorly tolerated by some patients, as also reported by Sánchez-Santos et al [17].…”

“…Long-term data are limited. The overall weight loss results we registered at 24 months (%EWL, 75% ± 17.7%) were better than those described in the recently published report of the Spanish National Registry (%EWL, 68% ± 28.9%) [17]. In the reported series, the authors used a 32-or 34-Fr bougie and noted a better weight loss than reported in other studies [2,6].…”

“…In addition, sleeve gastrectomy decreases the level of ghrelin hormone, has a less malnutritive effect, allows continued endoscopic access to the pancreaticobiliary system, and provides comparative weight loss and subsequent resolution of comorbidities that parallels gastric bypass surgery. Several studies now have demonstrated that the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is safe and provides similar weight loss and resolution of comorbidities to that of duodenal switch or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass [2,7]. Bellanger [10].…”

“…A multi-center study by Sanchez et al [13] found that hypertension was improved in 63% of LSG patients. Hutter et al [14] conducted a prospective study on 944 patients and reported that 68% had improvement or resolution of hypertension at one year follow up.…”
