Short Communication: Urinary excretion of glutamine transaminase K as an early index of mercuric chloride-induced nephrotoxicity

Abstract: The possibili that urinary glutamine transaminase K activity might be a marker of a proximal tubule segment-specific response to mercuric chloride was investigated in male rats after a single i.p. injection in time-course and dose-response experiments. Urinary total proteins and angiotensin converting enzyme activity were determined simultaneously. Urinary indices showed an early increase (within 5 h of treatment) of total proteins and angiotensin converting enzyme, whereas glubmine transaminase K increased 10… Show more

“…Angiotensin-converting enzyme is a brush-border enzyme distributed along the whole proximal tubule, even though its activity is prevalently in the pars recta. 22 Owing to its localization in the brush border, it shows high sensitivity to acute and chronic tubulotoxicity caused by chemicals such as mercuric chloride 23 and cadmium. 24 Naive male rats (115 samples) showed a wide range of urinary values (8.9-63.7 µmol mmol −1 creatinine and 59.4-282.7 nmol h −1 ).…”
