Short Electrospun Fibers by UV Cutting Method

Abstract: Short electrospun fibers were obtained by using UV cutting method. Either polymers with double bonds with a photocross‐linker (CL) and photoinitiator (PI) or known photochemistry of coumarin ([2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction) without the addition of CL and PI is utilized for making short electrospun fibers. The electrospun fibers were irradiated by UV light in the presence of a mask with a defined width of slits. The uncovered parts of fibers were cross‐linked and therefore became insoluble. The non‐cross‐linked… Show more

“…[81] In order to obtain shorter electrospun fibers for inhalation application a novel fiber cutting technique was developed based on lithography. [82] Here, polymers with double bonds, polybutadiene (PB) and a block copolymer of polystyrene and PB (Styrolux) were employed together with a photo cross-linker (PC) and photo initiator (PI) for obtaining oriented short electrospun fibers. Also, known photochemistry of coumarin ([2 þ 2] cycloaddition reaction) was utilized for making short electrospun fibers.…”

“…A large number of advanced techniques have been developed to fabricate 1D nanostructures with well‐controlled morphology and chemical composition. Among these methods, electrospinning seems to be the simplest and most versatile technique capable of generating 1D nanostructures (mainly nanofibers; other types of 1D nanostructure, such as nanorods, can be cut from nanofibers by special methods19, 20) from a variety of polymers 21–28. Compared to the commercial mechanical spinning process for generating microfibers, electrospinning mainly makes use of the electrostatic repulsions between surface charges to reduce the diameter of a viscoelastic jet or a glassy filament.…”

“…Physical methods use mechanical force or heat to break the continuous fibers into short fibers (Yoshikawa, Zhang, Zawadzak, & Kobayashi, 2011). Conventional methods such as grinding, milling, and cutting have been widely reported to mechanically break fibers into short fibers (Luo, Stride, Stoyanov, Pelan, & Edirisinghe, 2011;Stoiljkovic & Agarwal, 2008). Ultrasonication based on collapsing bubbles has recently emerged as an alternative method (Huang et al, 2009).…”
