Short forms of the WAIS-R with psychiatric inpatients: A comparison of techniques

Abstract: The relative performance of six Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale‐Revised short forms (Brooker & Cyr, 1986; Reynolds, Wilson, & Clark, 1983; Silverstein, 1982) was examined for a group of psychiatric inpatients (N = 50). Short forms were evaluated according to their ability to predict the Full Scale IQ using regression analysis. The standard error of estimate was significantly smaller for Silverstein's (1982) four‐subtest short form, which consists of Vocabulary, Arithmetic, Picture Arrangement, and Block Desi… Show more

“…The subtest scores were independent variables and FIQ was a dependent variable. To statistically show the optimality of the current result compared to the SF developed for the normal population (Kaufman et al, 1991;Misawa et al, 1990), the F-ratio was calculated (Boone, 1990). The residual (standard error of estimate squared, SE 2 ) of the best model obtained here served for the denominator, while the SE 2 derived from the model shown in the previous literature (Kaufman et al, 1991;Misawa et al, 1990) was placed as the numerator.…”

“…The most popular approach, probably, is to maximize the predictability of FIQ. In this paradigm, the best SFs are decided based on correlation with FIQ (Brooker and Cyr, 1986;Kaufman et al, 1991;Reynolds, 1983;Silverstein, 1982;Ward et al, 1987) or goodness of fit to single (Ringe et al, 2002) or multiple (Blyler et al, 2000;Boone, 1990) linear regression models. Subtests with higher correlations or a greater accountability for the total FIQ variance typically constitute the SFs.…”

“…We estimated the IQ of participants based on four subtests of the Dutch version of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-III: Vocabulary, Arithmetic, Block Design, and Picture Arrangement. The reliability of this short form has not been established for the WAIS-III yet, but for the WAIS-R these four tests have been found to estimate Full Scale IQ with greater accuracy than other variations (Boone, 1990). Data for several diagnostic measures are provided in Table 1.…”
