Short pulse multi-frequency phase-based time delay estimation

Abstract: An approach for time delay estimation, based on phase difference detection, is presented. A multiple-frequency short continuous wave pulse is used to solve the well-known phase ambiguity problem when the maximum distance exceeds a full wavelength. Within an unambiguous range defined with the lowest frequency difference between components, the corresponding phase difference is unique and any distance within this range can be determined. Phase differences between higher frequency components are used to achieve a… Show more

“…On the other hand, the ToF estimation error caused by digitization error of the received passband signal due to asynchronous sampling spectrum leakage can be improved by increasing the ADC sampling rate [25], [26]. Therefore, to obtain ranging results with high spatial resolution, accuracy and precision performing a direct digitization method, ADC sampling rates of about ten times higher than a carrier frequency is necessary, especially in low SNR circumstances [23], [24],…”

“…The cross-correlation TDE method and phase spectrum TDE method is being used widely in the trajectory tracking system and target location system, which due to its superiority in computation load and accuracy [1]. Furthermore, these algorithms have low request of hardware, which made it suitable for hardware realization.…”

“…The time delay estimation approach proposed here, is based on the use of local phase differences between specific frequency components of the received signal. Using this approach overcomes the need to cross-correlate the received signal with either a reference signal or the transmitted signal. The developed novel approach for time delay estimation, hence for distance and speed of sound measurement outperform the conventional correlation-based techniques and overcomes the 2π-phase ambiguity in the phase-based approaches and most practical situations can be accommodated (Assous et al, 2008;2010). Consider the time-frequency plot of a single bat pulse shown in Fig.1, we note that at any particular time within the pulse there are essentially two frequencies present.…”
