Short report: occurrence of Leishmania donovani DNA in donated blood from seroreactive Brazilian blood donors.

Abstract: Abstract. Human visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar) transmitted by blood transfusion has been described in previous reports. Seroprevalence of antibodies to Leishmania donovani was shown to be related to prior blood transfusions in multiply transfused hemodialysis patients in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. In this study, a possible correlation between seroreactivity and the presence of L. donovani DNA was investigated in asymptomatic healthy blood donors. Sera were tested using the fucose mannose ligand (F… Show more

“…Cutaneous leishmaniasis is highest in the Middle East, Syria, Brazil, and Peru (64), but imported cutaneous leishmaniasis is becoming problematic in the United States, particularly in military personnel (31,57). Leishmaniasis in the blood supply is becoming a concern (10,48), and an outbreak of Leishmania (L.) infantum infection affecting foxhounds has introduced a possible reservoir into the United States (52). As such, leishmaniasis is emerging as a disease of concern with both human and veterinary importance.…”

“…PCR protocols to detect Leishmania DNA in VL diagnosis have used a variety of samples, including spleen, lymph node, and bone marrow aspirates, whole blood, and buffy coat [92,[95][96][97][98][99][100][101].…”

“…This mode of transmission would be limited to organs that form part of the reticuloendothelial system, such as the liver. Second, although anecdotal, cases of transfusion-associated VL have been reported in Great Britain, France, Belgium, and India (275). Routine serology testing for Leishmania spp.…”
