Short Review of EMB Systems Related to Safety Concepts

Abstract: A growing interest in Electromechanical Brakes (EMBs) is discernible in the automotive industry. Nevertheless, no EMBs have ever been deployed for series production, although countless publications have been made, and patents have been filed. One reason for this is the need for the optimization of functional safety. Due to the missing mechanical/hydraulic link between the driver and the actuator, sophisticated concepts need to be elaborated upon. This paper presents the current state of the art of safety conce… Show more

“…This approach not only enhances students' understanding of wireless communication but also boosts their confidence in handling complex systems, demonstrating the critical role of experiential learning in the field of electromechanical communication. Schrade et al (2022) delve into the specific area of Electromechanical Brakes (EMBs) within the automotive industry, presenting a comprehensive review of safety concepts related to EMB systems. Their analysis sheds light on the challenges of optimizing functional safety in the absence of a mechanical/hydraulic link between the driver and the actuator (Nwokediegwu et al, 2024).…”

“…It is known that an EMB system has faster force response speed than hydraulic braking [35] and it is easy to construct a distributed braking system, which can separately adjust the actual braking force of every wheel [36,37]. Therefore, for enhancing the response performance of constant acceleration tracking control, an active braking system based on an EMB actuator in previous work is designed.…”

“…Although there are some advantages related to EMB, it is a pity that it remains at the stage of theory research and bench testing because of unsolved reliability problems when applying EMB in the automotive industry [5]. Meanwhile, there are no mature EMB system products sold on the market currently because of a lack of redundancy for the braking system.…”
