Modern treatments such as surgery, transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and high intensity focus ultrasound treatment would influence the manifestation of TCM syndromes. Herbs with traditional efficacy of tonifying Qi, blood and Yin, soothing liver-Qi stagnation, clearing heat and detoxifying and dissolving stasis, have been demonstrated to be potent to prevent hepatocarcinogenesis. TCM has been widely used in all aspects of integrative therapy in hepatocarcinoma, including surgical resection, liver transplantation, TACE, local ablative therapies and even as monotherapy for middle-advanced stage hepatocarcinoma. Clinical practices have confirmed that TCM is effective to alleviate clinical symptoms, improve quality of life and immune function, prevent recurrence and metastasis, delay tumor progression, and prolong survival time in hepatocarcinoma patients. The effective mechanism of TCM against hepatocarcinoma is related to inducing apoptosis, autophagy, anoikis and cell senescence, arresting cell cycle, regulating immune function, inhibiting metastasis and angiogenesis, reversing drug resistance and enhancing effects of chemotherapy. Along with the progress of research in this field, TCM will contribute more to the prevention and treatment of hepatocarcinoma. Aim: to test the possible association between the polymorphism of Osteopontin (OPN) gene with the risk and the clinical features of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). Methods: A total of 363 PTC patients and 413 healthy controls were enrolled. OPN expressions in tumor tissue were detected by immunohistochemistry. OPN gene polymorphisms, namely, -66T>G (rs28357094), -156G>GG (rs17524488), and -443C>T (rs11730582), were determined. Results: We observed that the PTC patients had significantly higher rates of -443TT genotypes than controls (P<0.001). The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed a significantly increased risk for PTC for the -443CC genotype compared with the -443TT genotype (adjusted OR= 4.312, 95%CI: 2.747 -6.987, adjusted P < 0.001). OPN protein was not expressed in normal thyroid tissues while tumor samples from PTC patients were shown to have high expressions of OPN. Also, we found that the high OPN expressions were significantly more prevalent in -443CC carriers than TT carriers (P <0.001). Both the CC carriers and OPN expression were closely associated with the cervical lymph node metastasis and angiolymphatic invasion of PTC. Conclusion: This study provides evidence to support the connection between the OPN genetic polymorphism and tissue expression with risk as well as the invasiveness of PTC.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignant tumors worldwide with a high mortality, and still there are only few effective methods to treat it. To this end, alternative medicines from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) are being investigated for their ability to eliminate the tumor or halt its progression. A large number of studies have shown that TCM can be an effective approach to treat the HCC in clinical trials when used alone or in combination with other therapies. Thus, TCM has made significant progress, and has begun to gain worldwide popularity for promoting healthcare and HCC treatment. Because of this progress, periodic summaries are needed to facilitate further research for the use of TCM to treat HCC. This paper provides a comprehensive summary of this work with regard to the following aspects: herbalist views on the etiology and therapeutic principles for treatment of HCC, treating HCC by TCM alone, treating HCC with TCM in combination with resection, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and interventional therapy, and other therapies. Additionally, the current main problems and future application prospects for treatment of HCC by TCM described, which could provide scientific guidance for clinician as well as references for the treatment of other cancers.

Abstract: The short-term clinical efficacy and the quality of life of patients with PHC can be improved by combining JLC with TACE. The serum OPN levels in PHC patients can reflect the curative effect of treatment and the prognosis of the disease.
