Short-term meditation modulates EEG activity in subjects with post-traumatic residual disabilities

Abstract: Highlights We aimed to detect EEG changes induced by meditative interventions in PTRD subjects. PTRD subjects exhibited increased gamma activity in the IPL relative to controls. Changes of delta activity in the precuneus correlated with changes of the QOL scale.

“…Studies, when examined for the changes in brain waves, also concluded a significant increase in the levels of brain wave activity. 91 Meditation practices such as mindfulness meditation, non-directive meditation, and breathing mediation increase the alpha and theta waves activity in the frontal region of the brain as well as results in extensive changes in gamma waves frequency. 92 In addition, yoga has been found to contribute to a prominent level of increased alpha and theta waves activity in the brain.…”

“…This procedure is based on the Fisher's permutation [95]. Correction of significance for multiple comparisons (i.e., between all ROIs for each frequency band) was performed using the nonparametric randomization procedure, included in the eLORETA software (for more details, see [64,73]). Briefly, this procedure computes 5000 data randomizations to determine the critical probability threshold of T-values [95,96] corresponding to a statistically corrected (i.e., after the multiple ROIs comparisons in each frequency) p-values (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01).…”

“…The standard electrode locations on the MNI152 scalp have been determined according to previous studies [70,71]. The three-dimensional spatial solution is limited to cortical gray matter, as determined by the probabilistic Talairach atlas [72], comprising 6239 voxels of 5 cubic mm spatial resolution (for details, see [62][63][64]73,74]). Only voxels that were unambiguously identified as cortical grey matter and those unequivocally felled within the brain compartment were considered by the software.…”

“…The previous studies [5][6][7][8][9][10] have shown the efficacy of alternative and complementary therapies on various neuropsychiatric disorders and found a significant decrease in the symptoms of anxiety and depression by activating the anti-inflammatory physiological mechanism that significantly improved the quality of life of patients. Studies 48 have also been conducted to show a significant increase in the levels of the alpha and theta electroencephalography (EEG) waves activity in the frontal region of the brain as well as result in extensive changes in the frequency of gamma wave 49 by balancing the effect on the functional activity of participants in the left and right hemisphere. 13,26,50,51 Previous neuroimaging studies 52,53 have shown the different brain areas activated including the PFC, amygdala, superior temporal lobe, and hippocampus-strongly support focused attention but no literature has engrossed on the "maintenance of the advance state of meditation."…”
