Short-term Risk of Revision THA in the Medicare Population Has Not Improved With Time

Abstract: Introduction Advances in surgical technique, implant design, and clinical care pathways have resulted in higher expectations for improved clinical outcomes after primary THA; however, despite these advances, it is unclear whether the risk of revision THA actually has decreased with time. Understanding trends in short-and mid-term risks of revision will be helpful in directing clinical, research, and policy efforts to improve THA outcomes.Question/purposes We therefore asked (1) whether there have been changes … Show more

“…If no occurrences were recorded for a health‐state, an estimated incidence of 0.1% was applied 37 . Both one‐ and 5‐year data for the mTHA cohort were extracted from available sources in the literature 2,21–26,30 . 1‐year RA‐THA data were queried from institutional records of a consecutive series of patients who underwent primary THA with a single experienced arthroplasty surgeon at the same institution, with the assistance of the fluoroscopy‐based ROSA® Total Hip System (Zimmer Biomet, Warsaw IN, USA).…”

“…Global trends indicate a rising prevalence of total hip arthroplasties (THA). Similarly, revision arthroplasties will increase, which are more expensive and are associated with poorer outcomes and more complications [1][2][3]. THA procedures in the United States are estimated to grow by 174% until the year 2030, while the number of THA revisions will double by 2026 [4].…”
