“…Short‐toed Treecreeper exhibited the most pronounced population differentiation of the six species among the three populations in this study. In contrast to the taxonomy reported by Harrap (2020), which considers the same insular subspecies of Short‐toed Treecreeper ( C. b. dorotheae ) to be present in Crete and Cyprus, we found populations in Crete to differ more from those in Cyprus than those from continental Greece. This finding suggests the Cretan population might also merit description as a distinct taxon, potentially supporting the resurrection of the ‘ spatzi ’ taxon (Stresemann 1926).…”

“…We compared genetic diversity and population differentiation between the two islands and found that populations from Cyprus had higher genetic diversity compared with those from Crete for all six species of this study. All species were more differentiated between island populations than between island and mainland, including in Short‐toed Treecreeper, purported elsewhere to be the same subspecies on the islands (Harrap 2020).…”

“…The Coal Tit is a small passerine that is resident in Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia [ 23 ]. The distribution of the Short-toed Treecreeper is limited to Europe and North Africa [ 24 ]. The challenges associated with monitoring the Coal Tit are primarily related to its canopy habits, as they often inhabit the upper and outer parts of the forest canopy [ 25 ], making them potentially difficult to observe depending on forest structure.…”
