Shorter Time to Full Preterm Feeding Using Intact Protein Formula: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract: Background: This study was carried out to evaluate enteral feeding advancement and tolerance in preterm infants receiving one of two marketed formulas: intact protein preterm formula (IPF) or extensively hydrolyzed formula (EHF) for the first 14 feeding days. Methods: Primary outcome was days to full enteral feeding (≥140 mL/kg/day). Per protocol analyses included the following: all participants who met study entrance criteria and completed study feeding (primary) and those who received ≥75% enteral intake fro… Show more

“…Secondly, our follow-up stopped at seven years, possibly missing or underestimating any association of EAR with obesity or being overweight that occurred after seven years of age [48]. Furthermore, the timing of adiposity rebound is influenced by many other confounding factors, such as maternal smoking during pregnancy, socio-economic status of the family, screening time, diet, and early protein intake during neonatal admission [6,49,50]. This paper is the first to show EAR prevalence in a cohort of ex-preterm newborns and to evaluate the role of different neonatal factors on EAR with a follow-up up to seven years.…”

“…On the contrary, there is limited evidence regarding nutritional preventive action against the future development of allergies in this vulnerable population ( 13 ). This paper describes the follow-up results of a previous published triple-blind, controlled, clinical trial, in preterm neonates fed with either intact protein formula or extensively hydrolyzed formula ( 14 , 15 ).…”

“…The methodological characteristics of the analyzed studies are detailed in Table 3. Among the objectives of the analyzed investigations, we distinguished nine that compared the effects of feeding with FM, BM, and DHM [21,25,[27][28][29]32,33,35,36], five that evaluated the effects of different compositions of FM and/or fortifiers [19,24,26,30,34], and four investigations that compared the effects of FM and DHM [20,22,23,31]. The methodological characteristics of the analyzed studies are detailed in Table 3.…”
