Should Doctors Open Online Consultation Services? An Empirical Investigation of Their Impact on Offline Appointments

Abstract: Online healthcare portals have become prevalent worldwide in recent years. One common form of healthcare portal is the online consultation website, which provides a bridge between patients and doctors and reduces patients’ time and cost when seeking healthcare services. Another form is the healthcare service appointment website, which facilitates offline visits for patients. Though nominally separate, the behaviors of the users (including patients and doctors) on these two types of websites could be related to… Show more

“…By matching each treated firm with one control firm with the closest propensity score, we obtain the PSM-matched firms. The logit regression model is as follows: Next, we obtain all the observations from 1997 to 2014 for the PSM-matched firms and use the new sample created to conduct the PSM-difference-in-differences (DiD) test by reestimating our regression equation (3) (Cheng et al, 2020;Fan et al, 2022;Kumar et al, 2022aKumar et al, , 2022bPan & Qiu, 2022). 9 The comparison of the summary statistics of the treatment group and control group before and after PSM is shown in the Supporting Information (Table OA5).…”

“…The correlation coefficients are less than 0.8, indicating that multicollinearity is not a major concern in our study. We also follow Fan et al (2022) and Khurana et al (2019) to check the variance inflation factors, which are less than 10 for all of the variables.…”

“…Social media platforms could be exploited for assessing care coordination goals and plans for patients (Fan et al., 2022; Kumar & Qiu, 2022; Strekalova et al., 2018). In addition to data from EHR systems, IoT sensor devices, and mobile devices, future research should tap into the unstructured data available in various online patient forums for addressing important care coordination research questions.…”
