Shoulder injuries in soccer goalkeepers: review and development of a FIFA 11+ shoulder injury prevention program

Abstract: In the last years, shoulder injuries have represented an increasing health problem in soccer players. The goalkeepers are more exposed to shoulder disorders than other field players. Injury prevention exercises for upper limbs were cited in few studies involving throwing athletes, but we know that goalkeepers need a specific program. The purpose of this study is to describe the development of an adapted Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) 11+ program, namely the FIFA 11+ shoulder, which ta… Show more

“…Joints affected by osteoarthritis of the lower or upper extremities may significantly restrict the performance in jobs, particularly if the goalkeepers are amateur athletes requiring full use of hands and fingers in their occupational jobs. In football, only goalkeepers have a high injury prevalence to the upper extremities including wrists and fingers because of the football-specific skills required on field [9,10]. This study presented the high injury prevalence of 100 % of wrists and fingers of football goalkeepers as well as the prevalence of severe joint injuries to wrists and fingers of more than 50 %.…”

“…These differences may also be associated with a different injury profile of goalkeepers. The lower extremities of football goalkeepers are often affected by injury; however, goalkeepers also sustain injuries to the upper extremities up to five times more often than outfield players [10,11]. Particularly the wrist and finger joints of football goalkeepers are frequently affected by injury [12,13].…”

“…Estos circuitos de entrenamiento se pueden realizar dos veces por semana por un periodo de duración de 20 minutos a través de ejercicios funcionales de movimiento utilizando elementos como bancos, bases inestables, maquina de fuerza, bandas elásticas. Adicionalmente, estos circuitos trabajan los elementos centrales y periféricos del movimiento corporal humano obteniendo un balance a nivel articular, muscular, biomecánico y sensorial (20)(21)(22)(23)(29)(30)(31)(32)(33).…”

“…Appropriate strengthening of the shoulder dynamic stabilizer muscles and adequate neuromuscular control-patterns is crucial in preventing shoulder injuries 4,12 . Based on these insights, recent shoulder injury prevention programs for athletes 4,13,14 have purposed specific shoulder instability resistance training exercises. Particularly, most of the exercises are performed uni-laterally in unstable conditions involving an increased level of postural control (standing, planking, kneeing and laying on stability ball) and/or with external overload devices challenging motor-coordination (elastics, balls, dumbbells).…”
