Shrinkage control in a photopolymerizable hybrid solgel material for holographic recording

Abstract: We report the correction of the shrinkage observed during UV postrecording curing in a holographic solgel material that was recently achieved by the use of various chemical formulations for the composition of the hybrid supporting matrix. We found that a chemical modification of the matrix noticeably attenuates the shrinkage (from 1.3% to 0.4% of the material's initial thickness with the inclusion of just 20% tetramethylorthosilicate), providing a material with improved stability for permanent data storage app… Show more

“…To observe the effects of the species diffusion clearly, we studied surface gratings with a spatial period of 0.168 mm. Shrinkage and swelling in photopolymers have been discussed by many authors [14][15][16][17][18]. It is well known that shrinkage occurs when monomer molecules begin to link forming chains of polymer, compacting the layer and decreasing the holes size.…”

“…The first deals with advanced material compositions [16,[21][22][23], including the incorporation of inorganic substances [10,24]. The second possibility is to apply special material processing, such as pre-imaging, incoherent-light exposure [25,26].…”

“…In particular volumetric deformations may cause a Bragg angle detuning by means of altered grating constants with the result of a disturbed selectivity and optical functionality. [12] As a consequence, many efforts are made to reduce shrinkage as an undesired side effect in terms of advanced material compositions, [9,13,14] special material processing [15] or by means of incorporation of inorganic substances. [16,17] Cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP) systems show some advantages compared with the freeradically polymerizing materials.…”
