Shrubby and forest fringe communities of the inselberg - rainforest ecotone in Atlantic Central Africa

Abstract: Background and aims -Inselbergs are rock outcrops standing out from the surrounding plains. In the rainforest landscape they can be considered as forming "xeric islands". Plants on inselbergs endure very harsh edaphic and microclimatic conditions. The inselberg -rainforest ecotone is characterized by the spatial transition from monocotyledonous mats and grasslands to an herbaceous fringe, a shrubby fringe, a forest fringe and a saxicolous forest. We describe here the plant communities of the shrubby and forest… Show more

“…It is high for outcrops in unglaciated USA (Baskin and Baskin, 1988). It is low on inselbergs in Atlantic Central Africa, limestone outcrops of South Africa (2%), or completely absent in inselbergs of the Ivory Coast in West Africa and of South Africa (Porembski et al, 1996;Burke et al, 1998;Changwe and Balkwill, 2003;Mignaut et al, 2010). Explanations for the low levels of endemism of some outcrop floras focus on the extinction of local endemics or on the impossibility to evolve new endemic species.…”

“…In this case, the forest's environmental condition that determines the diversity and abundance of Diptera includes the amount of sunlight and type of flora that they are inhibited and attracted by. The forest fringe which is characterised by many shrubs, small trees, epiphytes, and herbaceous species, received lateral sunlight until the ground [29]. Based on studies by Shean et al [30] and Sharanowski et al [31],…”

“…Hence microclimatic variation, due to topographic and indirect effects of soil moisture variability [17] , within GOs could buffer against regional climate change, and could continue to provide habitats for species occurring on or around them. Granite outcrops are generally rich in biodiversity, and are therefore of great conservation importance [31] , [32] . In south-western Australia, at least 1200 vascular plant taxa are found on GOs [31] , and GOs harbour a considerable proportion of the region's invertebrate, reptile, bird and mammal faunas [33] , [34] .…”
