shy Role of natural compounds in preventing and treating breast cancer

Abstract: Breast cancer (BrCa) is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in women. Alarming increases in the cases quests for more effective treatment of BrCa. As most chemotherapeutic drugs are associated with drug resistance, cancer relapse, and side effects, scientists are turning to agents with more efficacy, such as natural compounds for treatment and prevention of BrCa. Selected natural compounds, substances derived from living organisms, promote apoptosis and inhib… Show more

“…Apart from the regulatory role in the proliferation of cancer cells, CyclinD1 is also capable of controlling other aspects of the cell fate, like the apoptosis, a process concerning the elimination of possibly malignant cells and involving both the activation of caspase‐9 and the execution of caspase‐3 (Araya et al., 2021; Carneiro & El‐Deiry, 2020; Roué et al., 2008). The mechanisms of action of medicinal herbs and natural compounds on managing BC have been extensively revealed (McGrowder et al., 2020; Noel et al., 2020). For instance, it has been evidenced that San‐Zhong‐Kui‐Jian‐Tang, a prescription of TCM, plays an anti‐cancer role through suppressing the growth of BC cells, blocking the cell cycle (i.e., inducing cell to undergo cell cycle G0/G1 arrest), and enhancing apoptosis, apart from the regulation on the amounts of cyclinD1 and the activation of caspase‐9 (Hsu et al., 2006).…”

“…Cancer chemoprevention is a pharmacological modality using natural or synthetic chemical agents to prevent, suppress, or delay the initiation of carcinogenesis or to inhibit premalignant cells from becoming malignant and invasive diseases [ 45 , 46 , 47 , 48 ]. Mechanistically, different chemo-preventive agents elicit their chemoprevention by affecting various molecular steps in different stages of carcinogenesis (initiation, promotion, and development).…”

“…Resveratrol (RES) is a polyphenol found in grapes, red wine, pines, peanuts, mulberries, and various products derived from other plant species. RES exerts anti- or pro-oxidant effects, binds to and modulates various molecular targets, inhibits tubulin polymerization, and induces apoptosis via cell cycle arrest at the G 2 -S checkpoint [ 115 , 116 , 117 , 118 , 119 , 120 ]. In a study of autophagy, RES-treated OVCAR-3 cells induced the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and apoptosis [ 94 ].…”
