SiOCN Functionalized Carbon Nanotube Gas Sensors for Elevated Temperature Applications

Abstract: Silicon Oxycarbonitride (SiOCN) functionalization is proposed for stable, reproducible, reliable, and enhanced gas-sensing properties in carbon nanotube (CNT) gas sensors. The process is very simple: liquid precursor completely coats the surfaces of the CNTs without requiring any surface modification and a thin layer of semiconductor ceramic SiOCN is created on the CNTs after heat treatment. This new kind of conductometric gas sensors can detect 10 ppm NH 3 and 2 ppm NO 2 at temperatures up to 350°C. The stabi… Show more

“…In order to increase the reactivity, selectivity and sensitivity of carbonaceous materials to gases [133], they can undergo treatments. Among processes for gas sensing improvement such as acid treatments [134,135], plasma ones [136,137], functionalisation with polymers [138], decoration with nanoparticles [139,140], etc. [141], fluorination exhibits numerous advantages [142][143][144].…”

“…The feasibility of using polyvinyl alcohol electrospun nanofibers containing Ag nanoparticles for detecting amines by surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) after adsorption from the gas phase on the metal NPs, was approached for the detection of biogenic amines [ 27 ]. A very simple method was used to completely coat the surfaces of CNTs without requiring any surface modification, creating a thin layer of semiconductor ceramic SiOCN on the CNTs after heat treatment [ 28 ]. This new kind of conductometric gas sensor can detect 10 ppm NH 3 and 2 ppm NO 2 at temperatures up to 350 °C.…”
