Sialoendoscopy in the diagnosis and management of obstructive sialadenitis

Abstract: As an institution that recently began performing sialoendoscopies, we show similar success rates compared to other programs. Obstacles included the initial cost of acquiring equipment and the associated learning curve of using a new technique. Similar to other programs, successful extraction of sialoliths was limited with larger stones. In the future, we hope to use laser lithotripsy for fragmentation, a technique already being trialed at some institutions.

“…Nonspecific data and/or a lack of data in most publications make precise analysis and assessment of the value of sialendoscopy-guided therapy difficult. Overall success rates of the procedures were in the range of 80-100%; complete resolution of symptoms was achieved in 50-80% and gland preservation in 90-100% of cases 1 5 9 10 14 49 53 54 56 58 .…”

“…Ultrasonography represents an excellent firstlevel diagnostic technique because it reveals ductal and highly mineralized stones with a diameter of at least 1.5 mm with an accuracy of 99 % [7]. Ultrasound can detect upto 90% of salivary duct stones.…”
