Sialolipoma: a report of seven cases of a new variant of salivary gland lipoma

Abstract: We regard sialolipoma as a distinct variant of salivary gland lipoma that can occur in both the major and minor salivary glands. Superficial parotidectomy, or surgical resection in the case of palatal tumours, is an appropriate treatment for this benign tumour.

“…The histological characteristics of sialolipoma include the presence of neoplastic mature adipocytes and nonneoplastic salivary gland tissue [1]. Recently periductal fibrosis was suggested as a particular histological image of sialolipomas from MiSG [19].…”

“…Sialolipoma is characteristically composed predominantly of adipose tissue with admixed islands of salivary gland acini, ductal, myoepithelial and basal cells [32]. The epithelial/myoepithelial elements may show focal oncocytic change in some cases [32][33][34][35], but unlike oncocytic lipoadenoma, sialolipoma in general lacks a prominent oncocytic component. The tumor tends to show lobulation with evenly distributed salivary gland elements within the fat.…”

“…The term sialolipoma was coined by Nagao et al [12] in 2001 for biphasic salivary gland tumors that contain normal looking salivary gland elements (serous acini and ductal, myoepithelial and basal cells) admixed with a variable but usually prominent fatty tissue component. Although a few foci of oncocytic cells might be encountered in some cases, this variant generally lacks a significant oncocytic component.…”
