“…Most studies of the implications of family dynamics have highlighted the significance of parenting for later behavior in romantic relationships (Conger et al, 2000). Recent work, however, also identified links between adolescents’ sibling and romantic relationships in areas such as intimacy, conflict, and control (Doughty, McHale, & Feinberg, 2013), suggesting that siblings may play a role in youth’s romantic development. Indeed, such findings are consistent with research showing that sibling relationships are central in the formation of secure attachments (Collins & Sroufe, 1999), and that the social skills learned in sibling exchanges–such as emotion regulation, perspective taking, and conflict resolution--are paramount to forming and maintaining healthful relationships (Lockwood, Kitzmann, & Cohen, 2001).…”
