Abstract

Background The professionalization of nursing has gained in importance through the establishment of nursing degree study programs. The cognate disciplines medicine and nursing share an intensive work division; however, the perspective of the medical profession on the professionalization of nursing has hardly been investigated. Aim The presentation of an overview of the opinions and perspectives of professional doctors with respect to the professionalization of nursing awakens new impulses. Method The data collection was based on a representative physicians' magazine and relevant articles therein which have been included. The evaluation of the data was performed by the modified content analysis according to Mayring. Results and conclusion The relevance of the professionalization of nursing is not often discussed. This overview reveals a different picture. On the one hand change was perceived as being positive but on the other hand there is a more negative image as well as great skepticism concerning the professionalization of nursing.
