Abstract:Background: Children with sickle cell disease (SCD) have higher resting basal metabolic rates than healthy peers and have historically been underweight. Current treatments increase patients' hemoglobin (Hb) level and decrease reticulocytosis, which may in turn decrease patients' basal metabolic rates.
