Side effects by oral application of atmospheric pressure plasma on the mucosa in mice

Abstract: Cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP) has been investigated with promising results for peri-implant diseases treatment. However, prior to in-vivo applications of CAP sources in humans, short-term harmful mucosal damage or other unwanted side effects have to be reviewed. 180 male mice (B6C3F1) were divided into twelve treatment groups (n = 15). The right buccal cheek mucosa was treated with CAP. The first and second group each received continuous 10 sec irradiation with 2 different plasm… Show more

“…Indeed, we feel that this is a very important topic that is not comprehensively covered in plasma literature. There are only a few studies that mention the side effects of NTPs [ 78 , 79 , 80 ]. Generally, adverse drug reactions or side effects occur almost daily in healthcare institutions and have to be carefully considered in the optimization of treatment modalities [ 81 , 82 , 83 ].…”

“…In contrast to systemic therapies, CAP only has a locally limited effect. Other studies also indicate that CAP treatment has fewer systemic side effects than conventional therapies [ 52 , 53 , 54 ]. Another favorable property of CAP is that no resistance to CAP treatment has been observed in previous studies [ 52 , 55 ].…”

“…Depending on its settings, each device would have several effects on biomedical applications [ 12 ]. Considering the low temperature of application, as well as the acceptable thermal damage to tissues [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ], CAP has been suggested as a promising device, not only for systemic biomedical treatments, but also as a chairside approach [ 2 , 17 ] for the treatment of different oral diseases.…”
