Siestas among Brazilian native Terena adults: a study of daytime napping

Abstract: -Regular daytime napping behavior, also known as siesta culture, is influenced by circadian, cultural and environmental factors. This research analyzes characteristics of regular daytime napping in Brazilian Native Terenas. We evaluared 65 adults ( 32 M; 33 F ) from 18 to 75 years, with a mean age of 37.2, from the Indian Reservation village Córrego do Meio, in the central region of Mato Grosso do Sul. Daytime napping characteristics were evaluated by means of a standard questionnaire applied to each individua… Show more

“…They also report fewer actual episodes of behavioral sleepiness during the active phase (i.e., falling asleep against one's will and/or at inappropriate times) compared to men. Moreover, several studies report that men have a higher predisposition for afternoon napping than women [25], [17]. The results from the current study suggest that sex-linked genes have direct regulatory influence s on the sleep-wake cycle and are at least partially responsible for increased compulsions to nap during the active phase (daytime in humans, nighttime in mice) when sleep pressure is high.…”

“…Among an agricultural population in Brazil, 72.3% of adults napped during the day at least once per week and 35.9% of males and 20.5% of females napped every day (Reimao et al, 2000). By comparison, in a national telephone poll in the U.S. 55% of adults said they take at least one nap during the week (National Sleep Foundation, 2005).…”

“…Although most available literature concerns western postindustrial populations, recent work has addressed greater ecological and cultural diversity. Reports document normative napping and co-sleeping in populations as diverse as agrarian Brazil (Reimao et al, 2000b;Reimao, Souza, Medeiros, & Almirao, 1998) and urban China or Japan (X. Liu, Liu, Owens, & Kaplan, 2005;Park, Matsumoto, Shinkoda, Nagashima, Kang, & Seo, 2001).…”
