Sigmoid schwannoma: A rare case

Abstract: Schwannomas are rare tumors derived from the cells of Schwann that form the neural sheath. When located in the gastrointestinal tract, they constitute together with leiomyoma, leiomyoblastoma, and leiomyosarcoma, the gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). Peripheral nerve sheath tumors represent 2-6% GIST with most common location, the stomach and the small intestine. Schwannomas of the colon and rectum are extremely rare and radical excision with wide margins is mandatory, due to their tendency to recur loca… Show more

“…They are usually treated with radical surgical resection with margins free of disease 2. They can appear with local recurrence and malign degeneration 2. We present a case of a 79-year-old woman with sigmoid colonic schwannoma that was detected on colonoscopy, who underwent surgical resection and was diagnosed histologically.…”

“…2 In addition, gastrointestinal schwannomas are most commonly in the stomach, whereas extremely rare in the rectum. 3,4 Most rectal schwannoma grow slowly and are asymptomatic; sometime they may cause rectal bleeding, colonic obstruction, defecation disorders, and pain. [3][4][5] Gastrointestinal schwannoma grossly and clinically resembles gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST).…”

“…3,4 Most rectal schwannoma grow slowly and are asymptomatic; sometime they may cause rectal bleeding, colonic obstruction, defecation disorders, and pain. [3][4][5] Gastrointestinal schwannoma grossly and clinically resembles gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). However, the distinction between schwannoma and GIST is important because the former is benign even when large and mitotically active; moreover, the treatment and prognosis can differ markedly.…”
