Signal acquisition module design for multi-channel surface magnetic resonance sounding system

Abstract: To obtain a precise 2D/3D image of fissure or karst water, multi-channel magnetic resonance sounding (MRS) systems using edge-to-edge or overlapping receiving coils are needed. Thus, acquiring a nano-volt signal for a small amount of the aquifer and suppressing the mutual coupling between adjacent coils are two important issues for the design of the signal acquisition module in the system. In the present study, we propose to use a passive low pass filter, consisted of a resistance (R) and capacitance (C), to i… Show more

“…The filter system adopted in the UMRS detection system developed in this study is illustrated in Figure 7 a. After passing the matching network, the noise-containing signals output by the antenna system are sent to the filter system via a preamplifier that adopts three parallel low-noise amplifier chips as the core amplifier unit [ 15 ]. According to tests, the input short-circuit noise level for the preamplifier can reach 1.0 nV , and this value satisfies the requirement for detecting weak UMRS signals.…”

“…Lin et al [ 15 ] proposed using three parallel amplifiers to reduce the preamplifier input noise, and this method can reduce the noise level to below 1 nV . In addition to hardware noise-suppression techniques, many previous scholars have provided various software noise-cancelling methods.…”

“…The stray capacitance of the coil sensor is about several nF and C is about hundreds of nF, so the stray capacitance will not affect the receiving circuit. Based on different voltage noise and current noise, preamplifiers are selected from the following list: FET amplifiers OPA124 (Texas Instruments, Inc., Dallas, TX, USA) and AD745 (Analog Devices, Inc., Norwood, MA, USA) with low current noise, bipolar amplifiers AD797 (Analog Devices, Inc., Norwood, MA, USA) and LT1028 (Linear Technology, Milpitas, CA, USA) [20] with low voltage noise and OP27 (Texas Instruments, Inc., Dallas, TX, USA) with a moderate voltage and current noise. The number of turns of the coil are changed (60 to 300) and connected to different preamplifiers.…”

“…Sundqvist [19] introduced that parallel amplifiers would reduce the noise of circuit. Lin et al [20] applied this technique in MRS with multi-channel instrument. However, this method is only suitable for a coil with large sizes and low inductance because of its current noise will be dominant when using small multi-turn coil.…”

“…Moreover, the FID signals sampled by the broadband sensor can be better suited for the post digital signal processing methods [ 20 , 21 , 22 ]. Lin et al described a non-tuned coil system for the MRS application that involved minimizing the preamplifier equivalent input noise to improve the sensitivity [ 23 ]. However, the sensitivity of their MRS coil system is still lower than that of the tuned design.…”
