BackgroundEsophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the most lethal malignancies. Increasing evidence has revealed that Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection may be associated with the possible etiology of ESCC. Nevertheless, the precise role of HPV in ESCC remains unclear. MethodsProliferation and apoptosis capability of ESCC cells upon infection of HPV16 E6 were detected by CCK-8 assay and Western blotting analysis. Wound healing assay and Transwell experiment were conducted to determine the ability of migration and invasion, and the mRNA expression of E6AP, p53, miR-34a was determined by real-time PCR after transfected with HPV16 E6 plasmid. ResultsIn ESCC cells, the ability of proliferation, migration and invasion were increased, and the ability of apoptosis was decreased after transfected with HPV16 E6 plasmid. Furthermore, the mRNA level of E6AP, P53 and miR-34a were decreased in HPV16 E6-transfected cell lines. ConclusionsOur results not only provide evidence that in ESCC, HPV16 E6 promotes cell proliferation, migration and invasion, inhibits cell apoptosis, but also suggest that there may be a correlation between E6AP, P53 and miR-34a in HPV-transfected cell lines. These ndings indicated that HPV16 E6 may play an important role in the development of ESCC.

The treatment of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is challenging and treatment outcomes depend on numerous unknown and patient-specific factors. Corticosteroids are the cornerstone of ITP treatment, but they are associated with many side effects. In this retrospective cohort study, treatment outcomes and treatment adherence in patients with ITP were investigated in 214 ITP patients from November 15, 2022 to March 15, 2023. Multinomial regression analysis models were used to identify predictive factors for treatment outcomes. A p value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Most study participants were female 161 (75.5%), and the majority 172 (80.4%) of them were taking prednisolone only. In terms of treatment adherence, 178 (83.2%) of the study participants adhered well to their ITP medications. The complete response rate at 3 months was 139 (65.0%). Predictive factors for partial response were increased negative impact of ITP on health-related quality of life (AOR = 1.221, 95% CI 1.096–1.360), being treated at Tikur Abessa Sepcialazed Hospital (AOR = 0.431, 95% CI 0.197–0.941) and the presence of heavy menstrual bleeding (AOR = 2.255, 95% CI 0.925–5.497) compared to patients with complete response. Hepatitis B virus-infected ITP patients (AOR = 0.052, 95% CI 0.004–0.621) were also a predictive factor for no response compared to complete response.

Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is a hematologic condition characterized by decreased circulating platelets, resulting in bruising, bleeding gums, and internal bleeding. This disorder can be categorized into two primary forms based on the duration of symptoms and underlying causes. Acute ITP primarily affects young children, typically between the ages of two and six, but it can also impact older children and adults. Viral infections like chickenpox, respiratory infections, or gastroenteritis often precede it. Acute ITP manifests suddenly and lasts for a short period, typically less than six months and sometimes only a few weeks. On the other hand, chronic ITP primarily affects adults but can occur at any age, including childhood and adolescence. The main characteristic of chronic ITP is the persistence of symptoms for more than six months. It can be either idiopathic (primary), with no discernible etiologic cause, or secondary to various conditions such as autoimmune diseases (e.g., systemic lupus erythematosus), viral infections (e.g., human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis C virus (HCV)), certain malignancies (e.g., chronic lymphocytic leukemia), or drug reactions. This case report presents the management of a 36-year-old African American female diagnosed with ITP associated with systemic lupus erythematosus, Helicobacter (H.) pylori, and hepatitis B infection.
