“…The islands in eastern Bass Strait are largely composed of Late Devonian I-and S-type granites and abundant granodiorites emplaced mostly during the main Tabberabberan deformation (Black et al, 2005). In the Furneaux Islands, along the Bassian Rise, they form~70% of the Palaeozoic basement (~1090 km 2 ) and intrude the Mathinna Supergroup turbidite sequence (Black et al, 2005;McClenaghan, 2006).…”

“…It is also very important to remember that the current state of the crust is a product of prolonged tectonic evolution that has resulted in a succession of geological events, each of which will have left its mark on the shear wave velocity distribution that can be observed today. These include, but are not limited to: (i) initial formation of the crust/emplacement of a microcontinent (VandenBerg et al, 2000;Cayley et al, 2002) (ii) intrusion of large volumes of felsic-intermediate igneous rocks during the Early Devonian (e.g., those that formed the northwest-trending Bassian Rise) (O'Sullivan et al, 2000;Black et al, 2005;McClenaghan, 2006), and (iii) crustal thinning accompanied by basin formation associated with failed rifting in the Cretaceous (Veevers, 1986). Unravelling the signature of a single event is hence difficult, which makes overall interpretation a challenge.…”

“…Hervé, Fanning & Pankhurst (2003) suggested that granites of this age may be more abundant than present exposures suggest or lie outside South America. A possible hypothesis is that the Lachlan Orogen of Australia-northern Victoria Land and western Marie Byrd Land (Bradshaw, 2007) extends into eastern Marie Byrd Land with a similar range of granite ages to those seen in SE Australia (Birch, 2003) and Tasmania (Black et al 2005).…”
