Significant decrease in yield under future climate conditions: Stability and production of 138 spring barley accessions

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe response in production parameters to projected future levels of temperature, atmospheric carbon dioxide ([CO 2 ]), and ozone ([O 3 ]) was investigated in 138 spring barley accessions. The comprehensive set of landraces, cultivars, and breeder-lines, were during their entire life cycle exposed to a two-factor treatment of combined elevated temperature (+5• C day/night) and [CO 2 ] (700 ppm), as well as single-factor treatments of elevated temperature (+5• C day/night), [CO 2 ] (700 ppm), and… Show more

“…The production parameters were found to be strongly affected by the climate treatments as displayed in Table 2, and differences between cultivar responses were prominent as reported by Ingvordsen et al (2015). Elevated temperature decreased overall grain yield (55.8 %), number of grains and also aboveground vegetative biomass and HI.…”

“…The details of the experimental set ups are provided in (Ingvordsen, 2014) and Ingvordsen et al (2015). For the LCA study, we considered a subset of data, including 13 cultivars listed in Table 2 (Ingvordsen et al, 2015). Among these cultivars we further selected the five cultivars with the highest grain yield under the double-factor treatment, and considered them as a separate group, as reported in Table 2.…”

“…The varieties 'Brage', 'Brio' and 'Edvin' are 6-row and all others are 2-row sub-type. Varieties have been chosen according to their response in production parameters to a projected future climate, as well as the Slovene climate, and analysed in RERAF phytotron (Ingvordsen et al 2015).…”
