This article examines how participants in literacy events mediate the validation and legitimacy of official documents. Through articulating the perspectives of literacy as a social practice, paperwork studies, and the analysis of administrative burdens, we argue that the value of official documents is unstable and can fluctuate between valid and invalid each time applicants and frontline workers redefine the context of use. Through ethnographic observation, we gathered data on the historical production of birth certificates and the social construction of their meaning. We documented a participant’s unsuccessful efforts to renew her voter’s ID card over several years and in different government offices. We show how government employees rejected or accepted the same official birth certificate she presented, depending on how she framed her paperwork. Its meaning relied on the articulation of the negotiated administrative purpose, the definition of the context of use, and the document’s materiality.

En nuestra América, la Psicología Social Comunitaria (PSC) en el campo de la acción, el acompañamiento, la investigación y la formación académica, da cuenta de la diversidad de miradas integradoras de la complejidad de los entramados psicosociales y comunitarios en la región, como también, de los esfuerzos colectivos por fortalecer y consolidar la disciplina. En este sentido, a través de los capítulos se presenta un amplio espectro de perspectivas para hacer, tener y ser en la PSC del siglo XXI. En efecto, se puede observar una disciplina en movimiento, la cual ha cambiado el foco de atención y estudio de las/los agentes sociales con los que trabaja. Si bien, en un inicio la PSC delimita el interés en estudiar a la comunidad definida por Maritza Montero (2004) como un conjunto de personas en constante transformación y desarrollo, que tienen una relación de pertenencia entre sí, con identidad social y consciencia de comunidad. En la actualidad, el estudio y la definición del concepto comunidad se problematiza desde las epistemologías del sur- en términos de Boaventura de Sousa Santos- al ponderar la trama vincular de lo comunitario en el elemento que comuna como sustancia del ser óntico, en el sentido del nosotros y en el sentipensar el territorio

The scientific contributions of Western mental health professionals have been lauded and leveraged for global mental health responses to varying degrees of success. In recent years, the necessity of recognizing the inefficiencies of solely etic and Western-based psychological intervention has been reflected in certain decolonial scholars like Frantz Fanon gaining more recognition. Despite this urgent focus on decolonial psychology, there are still others whose work has historically and contemporarily not received a great deal of attention. There is no better example of such a scholar than Dr. Louis Mars, Haiti's first psychiatrist. Mars made a lasting impact on the communities of Haiti by shifting the conversation around Haitian culture and the practice of how people living with a mental illness were treated. Further, he influenced the global practice of psychiatry by coining "ethnopsychiatry" and asserting that non-Western culture should be intimately considered, rather than stigmatized, in treating people around the world. Unfortunately, the significance of his contributions to ethnopsychiatry, ethnodrama, and the subsequent field of psychology has effectively been erased from the disciplinary canon. Indeed, the weight of Mars' psychiatric and political work deserves focus.
