Silica-based PLC Type 32 x 32 Optical Matrix Switch

Abstract: We have developed the first silica-based PLC type 32 x 32 optical matrix switch. The switch is the largest scale waveguide type switch yet reported, which has excellent optical characteristics with an average insertion loss of 6.6 dB.

“…Linear optical circuits lie at the heart of all of these protocols, and a single LPU device with the ability to arbitrarily 'dial-up' such operations promises to replace a multitude of existing and future prototype systems. In the near term, combining LPUs with existing higher efficiency sources and detectors will expand their capabilities, while in the mid-term, integration of these components [63,64] with larger low-loss circuits [65] will open up new avenues of research and application.…”

“…Suitable switch elements of compact size and low insertion loss are emerging (e.g., using MEMS technology [28]) and the use of multi-stage techniques has been validated experimentally (e.g., the thermo-optic 32 x 32 matrix switch [29]). Multi-stage switch architectures have also been proposed in the related area of on-chip optical interconnection [30].…”

“…A great advantage of the PLC is long term stability due to absence of the mechanical components. With silica PLCs, multiport switches up to 32 Â 32 [1] have been reported, whose die size was as large as a 4-inch wafer. Silicon-based waveguides have strong optical confinement due to its large index contrast with the silica cladding, leading to more compact switch devices.…”
