Silica Membranes for Wetland Saline Water Desalination: Performance and Long Term Stability

Abstract: Abstract. In this study, silica thin film pH=6 (precursor TEOS:tetraethyl ortosilicate) developed from sol gel process and deposited (2 layers) directly onto alumina substrate(tubular support with 100 nm pore size) without depositing interlayer (interlayer-free).Then, the desalination process via pervaporation was applied to test the membranesperformanceusing artificial saline water and wetland saline water. Results show the decrease of water flux (1.9 to 1.43 kg m -2 h -1 ) and salt rejection(97 to 95%) when … Show more

“…In the second step, the sol pH is adjusted by the addition of the ammonia hydroxide; the pH increases rapidly to >4, which is much higher than the isoelectric point boundary (pH 1–3) of the silica species. Instantly, the silanol species are expected to all be deprotonated while participating in the polycondensation reaction, generating a large concentration of highly siloxane species [ 9 ]. However, the result is contrary to Elma, Riskawati and Marhamah’s [ 9 ] work, which produced the highest silanol on two-step catalyst, as shown in Table 2 .…”

However, the result is contrary to Elma, Riskawati and Marhamah’s [ 9 ] work, which produced the highest silanol on two-step catalyst, as shown in Table 2 . This suggests the difference of acid catalyst usage, e.g., organo catalyst (citric acid) instead of nitric acid in this work.…”

“…Mesoporous silica gains attention because of a thermally stable and strong structure [ 13 , 14 ]. Silica has unique physiochemical properties composed of a cross-linked network structure [ 15 , 16 ] and vigorous [ 17 ] and high surface area [ 18 ].…”

“…Among all types of membranes, silica has excellent mechanical strength and thermal stability. The unique characteristic of silica materials are physiochemical properties which consist of cross-linked network structure (Diniz Da Costa, 2000, Ellis, 2004, high surface area , and vigorous (Elma, Riskawati, Marhamah, 2018). Owing to these properties, silica has been gaining widespread attention in material research.…”
