Silica-Scaled Chrysophytes of Teletskoye Lake and Adjacent Area with a Description of a New Species from the Genus Mallomonas

Abstract: The silica-scaled chrysophyte flora of some lakes and rivers of the Altai Mountains was investigated by means of electron microscopy. Teletskoye Lake; the Biya, Chulyshman, and Katun Rivers; and small lakes around the area were studied. A total of sixteen taxa were recorded, including eight belonging to Mallomonas, five to Synura, and three to Paraphysomonas. A revision of previously reported taxa of scaled chrysophytes in this region was carried out. One species new to science from the genus Mallomonas was fo… Show more

“…Mallomonas striata is considered a cosmopolitan taxon [1,114]. However, recently it has been shown that M. striata is a complex of species that can be morphologically distinguished by the structure of bristles, the shape of scales, and the number and arrangement of structural elements on the surface of scales [66,67,115,116]. Only one scale was found, in general, corresponding to the type of Mallomonas striata in ultrastructure, so we reported it as M. striata sensu lato.…”

“…Among the representatives of the section Striatae, there are both widespread and rare species. Rare species have previously been shown to be confined to oligotrophic/mountain water bodies [26]. To date, eight species of the section Striatae have been found in Lake Baikal: M. striata var.…”

“…For comparison, we can point out that in Europe, which is much smaller in area, 114 species and infraspecific taxa of the genus Mallomonas are known [47]. Almost every study of a new region in Russia leads to the discovery of rare species and taxa new to science or the flora of the country [36,[39][40][41][42][43][44]48].…”
