Silica‐supported bis(imino)pyridyl iron(II) catalyst: nature of the support–catalyst interactions

Abstract: Ethylene polymerizations were performed using silica‐supported 2,6‐bis[1‐(2,6‐diisopropylphenylimino) ethyl] pyridine iron(II) dichloride with methylaluminoxane (MAO) as co‐catalyst. Silica was calcined at 600, 400 and 200 °C under vacuum for 8 h. The effect of calcination temperature of silica on the polymerization activity and the properties of the polymers obtained were examined. Catalyst–support interactions were examined by both a chemical method and XPS. It was observed that upon supporting the catalyst … Show more

“…In addition to other polystyrene [138] and silica supports [139,140,141,142,143,144] , iron and cobalt precatalysts have been immobilised on calcosilicate [145] , magnesium dichloride [146,147,148,149] , MCM-41 zeolite [150,151] , clay [152] and fluorotetrasilicic mica [153] . Supported systems have also been examined using alternative activators [154,155,156,157,158,159] .…”

“…The choice of ligand allows to tune the complex in combination with an activator from an ethylene oligomerization catalyst to a system generating high molecular weight polyethylene. The catalyst system can readily be supported on silica and other carriers keeping its high activity, and is still subject of recent developments [42][43][44][45][46][47][48]. The family of iron catalysts would allow to choose a combination for the preparation of a blend of polyethylenes, as they have various modes of polyethylene formation.…”
