“…[14] There is a preferential growing direction, corresponding to the evaporation direction. [15] A thorough morphology of SiO 2 and SiOx has been presented in [4]. Figure 3 shows the alignment for Sunset Yellow and Cromolyn liquid crystals in SiO 2 as a function of evaporation angle.…”

“…[1][2][3] Surface morphology of the alignment layers has a direct influence on liquid crystal arrangement, both in thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystals. In a previous publication, [4] a comparison between surface characteristics of thin non-stoichiometric silicon oxide (SiOx) and silica (SiO 2 ) layers, deposited at various evaporation angles, has been presented, along with their effect on thermotropic liquid crystal alignment. The selected deposition angle is a crucial factor that determines the morphology of the layer, which has a direct influence on the liquid crystal molecular arrangement near the surfaces, ultimately becoming a decisive control parameter for the final liquid crystal alignment.…”
A detailed study on optimal alignment layers and alignment properties has been carried out for the water-soluble lyotropic liquid crystals Sunset Yellow and Cromolyn. Two different inorganic layers, SiO 2 and SiOx, were deposited onto indium tin oxide-coated glasses and tested in sandwich-like cells for both lyotropic liquid crystals. Both layers could be conditioned to align the lyotropic liquid crystals producing excellent aligned cells.
