Silicone granulomas following free silicone gluteal augmentation

Abstract: Gallium-67 citrate has long been used for imaging of infection and inflammation. Although gallium-67 uptake due to silicone implants and silicone injections has been previously reported in the literature, very few cases are documented. We report a case of increased gallium-67 uptake in the buttocks in a patient who previously received silicone injections in the buttocks, to reemphasize silicone augmentation as a potential source of gallium-67 uptake. In addition, we present a F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/… Show more

“…Serious reactions to silicone injections have been reported, occurring 3 weeks to 23 years after treatment. Aftermaths include strong pain, skin lesions, deformities, recurrent cellulitis and abscesses, granulomas (“siliconoma” and “paraffinoma”) in the subcutaneous and muscular tissue, lymphadenopathy, silicone migration, and necrosis [ 37 , 38 , 39 ]. Systemic complications have also been reported, including acute pneumonitis, granulomatous hepatitis, organ compression, and sudden death secondary to intravascular embolization [ 40 ].…”

“…1,2 Silicone granuloma or siliconoma was first described as a direct result of liquid silicone injections, but these were banned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1991 due to numerous complications as well as the aesthetic and functional repercussions, often disastrous. [3][4][5][6] For this reason, silicone breast implants have since been preferred for breast reconstruction and augmentation. However, localized and systemic side-effects following silicone implants have also been reported.…”
