Geo log i cal Quar terly, 59 (1): 105-118, doi: 10.7306/gq.1211Si lu rian strata, stretch ing along the west ern mar gin of the East Eu ro pean Plat form from the Bal tic to the Black Sea, rep re sent a po ten tial tar get for both con ven tional and un con ven tional hy dro car bon ex plo ra tion. Dis tri bu tion of the black shale fa cies, pro spec tive for shale gas, and the reef fa cies, pro spec tive for oil, has been stud ied in re spect of palaeoenvironments. The Silu rian se quence has been in ves ti gated in the ter ri tory of Ukraine (Volyn-Podillyan Plate, Dobrogean Foredeep) and cor related with the data on Moldova and Ro ma nia (Moldovian Plat form). The oc cur rence of Si lu rian strata, their thick ness, and petrographic and lithological char ac ter is tics al lowed re con struct ing the dis tri bu tion of open-shelf, reef and la goonal fa cies. The reef fa cies mi grated dur ing the Wen lock-Mid dle Pridoli, shift ing to wards the open sea and back to wards the shore, and there fore has been termed a mi grat ing reef fa cies. Cor re spond ingly, the bound ary be tween the open-shelf and reef fa cies was shift ing. The fa cies dis tri bu tion was con trolled by the transgressive-re gres sive cy cles, which caused the fluc tu a tions of the shelf wa ter depth in dif fer ent time in ter vals of the Si lu rian. The shelf wa ter depth of about 100 m, where the top of the ox ygen-min i mum layer im pinged on the sea bot tom, was the boundary between the open-shelf facies, represented by organic-rich sediments, and the reef build ups.

The middle Silurian ‘big crisis’ refers to a graptolite extinction event and faunal turnover at the onset of a double‐peaked positive carbon isotope excursion. The crisis has been proposed to affect conodonts, giving rise to a sophisticated palaeoecological model of their stepwise extinction, known as the Mulde Event. However, the impact of the event on conodont faunas outside Gotland and the Silurian Baltic Basin remains unknown. Here, it is examined in the Widowo IG‐1 core (E Poland). The middle Silurian succession in this core represents foreshoal, shoal, and lagoonal settings on a tropical carbonate ramp on the shelf of the Eastern European Craton. Three positive δ13Ccarb excursions have been identified; the two upper excursions correlate with the Mulde isotope anomaly and with two global eustatic regressions. Conodont species proposed to be affected by the extinction event either were not observed or ranged through the extinction interval. Changes in their frequencies are best explained by the sequence stratigraphic architecture of the late Wenlock strata in the Widowo IG‐1 core. The little impact of the ‘big crisis’ may reflect facies homogeneity across the studied interval, supporting the hypothesis that the late Wenlock conodont turnover in epicontinental settings was primarily driven by eustatically controlled facies shifts. The pre-orogenic detrital zircon record of the Peri-Gondwanan crust

We present a statistical approach to data mining and quantitatively evaluating detrital age spectra for sedimentary provenance analyses and palaeogeographic reconstructions. Multidimensional scaling coupled with density-based clustering allows the objective identification of provenance end-member populations and sedimentary mixing processes for a composite crust. We compiled 58 601 detrital zircon U–Pb ages from 770 Precambrian to Lower Palaeozoic shelf sedimentary rocks from 160 publications and applied statistical provenance analysis for the Peri-Gondwanan crust north of Africa and the adjacent areas. We have filtered the dataset to reduce the age spectra to the provenance signal, and compared the signal with age patterns of potential source regions. In terms of provenance, our results reveal three distinct areas, namely the Avalonian, West African and East African–Arabian zircon provinces. Except for the Rheic Ocean separating the Avalonian Zircon Province from Gondwana, the statistical analysis provides no evidence for the existence of additional oceanic lithosphere. This implies a vast and contiguous Peri-Gondwanan shelf south of the Rheic Ocean that is supplied by two contrasting super-fan systems, reflected in the zircon provinces of West Africa and East Africa–Arabia.
