The advancement in nanotechnology has brought numerous benefits for humans in diverse areas including industry, medicine, and agriculture. The demand in the application of nanomaterials can result in the release of these anthropogenic materials into soil and water that can potentially harm the environment by affecting water and soil properties (e.g., soil texture, pH, organic matter, and water content), plants, animals, and subsequently human health. The properties of nanoparticles including their size, surface area, and reactivity affect their fate in the environment and can potentially result in their toxicological effects in the ecosystem and on living organisms. There is extensive research on the application of nano-based materials and the consequences of their release into the environment. However, there is little information about environmentally friendly approaches for removing nanomaterials from the environment. This article provides insight into the application of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), as one of the most commonly used nanomaterials, their toxicological effects, their impacts on plants and microorganisms, and briefly reviews the possibility of remediation of these metabolites using phytotechnology approaches. This article provides invaluable information to better understand the fate of nanomaterials in the environment and strategies in removing them from the environment.

This review presents a perspective on the research trends and solutions from recent years in the domain of antimicrobial packaging materials. The antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant activities can be induced by the main polymer used for packaging or by addition of various components from natural agents (bacteriocins, essential oils, natural extracts, etc.) to synthetic agents, both organic and inorganic (Ag, ZnO, TiO2 nanoparticles, synthetic antibiotics etc.). The general trend for the packaging evolution is from the inert and polluting plastic waste to the antimicrobial active, biodegradable or edible, biopolymer film packaging. Like in many domains this transition is an evolution rather than a revolution, and changes are coming in small steps. Changing the public perception and industry focus on the antimicrobial packaging solutions will enhance the shelf life and provide healthier food, thus diminishing the waste of agricultural resources, but will also reduce the plastic pollution generated by humankind as most new polymers used for packaging are from renewable sources and are biodegradable. Polysaccharides (like chitosan, cellulose and derivatives, starch etc.), lipids and proteins (from vegetal or animal origin), and some other specific biopolymers (like polylactic acid or polyvinyl alcohol) have been used as single component or in blends to obtain antimicrobial packaging materials. Where the package’s antimicrobial and antioxidant activities need a larger spectrum or a boost, certain active substances are embedded, encapsulated, coated, grafted into or onto the polymeric film. This review tries to cover the latest updates on the antimicrobial packaging, edible or not, using as support traditional and new polymers, with emphasis on natural compounds.

Частицы серебра размером меньше длины волны видимого света способны в значительной мере поглощать свет вследствие поверхностного плазмонного резонанса, частота и интенсивность которого зависит от формы и структуры наночастиц. То есть контроль строения нанокластеров Ag, широко применяемых в плазмонике, позволяет управлять длинами волн света, которые они рассеивают и поглощают. В данной статье рассматривается вопрос термической стабильности малых кластеров Ag с числом атомов, соответствующих «магическим» числам ГЦК структуры, при начальной аморфной конфигурации кластеров. Показано, что начальная аморфная морфология частиц способна в существенно изменить характер структурообразования нанокластеров Ag: формирование стабильной ГЦК структуры сменяется переходом к Dh - и Ih - конфигурациям. Silver particles smaller than the wavelength of visible light are capable of absorbing light to a large extent due to the surface plasmon resonance, the frequency and intensity of which depend on the shape and structure of nanoparticles. In other words, control of the structure of Ag nanoclusters, widely used in plasmonics, makes it possible to control the wavelengths of light that they scatter and absorb. This article discusses the issue of thermal stability of small Ag clusters with the number of atoms corresponding to the «magic» numbers of the fcc structure, with the initial amorphous configuration of the clusters. It has been shown that the initial amorphous morphology of particles can significantly change the nature of the structure formation of Ag nanoclusters: the formation of a stable fcc structure is replaced by a transition to Dh - and Ih - configurations.
