Silver nanoparticles for printable electronics and biological applications

Abstract: An environmentally friendly route to prepare stable concentrated aqueous dispersions of silver nanoparticles is described. It was found that Arabic gum, a well known stabilizing agent, can also rapidly and completely reduce Ag2O to metallic silver in alkaline solutions (pH > 12.0) and elevated temperature (65 °C). The average size of the silver nanoparticles could be tailored from 10 to 30 nm by varying the experimental conditions. By hydrolyzing either enzymatically or chemically the polysaccharide, it was… Show more

“…3 The synthesis of noble nanoparticles for electronics and environmental and biotechnology applications is an area of continued interest. 4 In general, metal nanoparticles are synthesized and stabilized using chemical methods such as chemical reduction, 5,6 electrochemical techniques, 7 and microwave-assisted process, 8 while more recent methods utilize green technology. 9 The use of plants for the synthesis of nanoparticles is novel and provides a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to chemical and physical synthesis.…”

“…One of this exuberant sampling is the usage of the noble metal silver in its nanoscale. Silver nanoparticles have found applications in fiber optics, single electron transistors, electronic connectors or integral capacitor banks (Lu et al 2006;Li et al 2005;Chiolerio et al 2011;Balantrapu and Goia 2009).…”

“…There are only a few reports on the direct preparation of concentrated dispersions of metal NPs. Dispersions of Ag NPs with sizes in the range of 10-30 nm and metal concentration of about 20 % were prepared by reduction of Ag 2 O with gum arabic, which is also a stabilizing agent [136]. Dodecanoic acid-protected Ag NPs (~7 nm) with a concentration of about 21 % were synthesized in toluene [70].…”
