Similarity and diversity of the Desmodesmus spp. microalgae isolated from associations with White Sea invertebrates

Abstract: Similarity and diversity of the phenotype and nucleotide sequences of certain genome loci among the single-celled microalgae isolated from White Sea benthic invertebrates were studied to extend the knowledge of oxygenic photoautotrophs forming microbial communities associated with animals. We compared four Desmodesmus isolates (1Hp86E-2, 1Pm66B, 3Dp86E-1, 2Cl66E) from the sponge Halichondria panicea, trochophore larvae of the polychaete Phyllodoce maculata, and the hydroids Dynamena pumila and Coryne lovenii, … Show more

“… Demodesmus sp. ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 reference barcode sequences reported by Fawley et al (2011) [ 53 ] and Gorelova et al (2014) [ 54 ] were included in the analysis together with Embrapa|LBA#2–3, #22–23, #26, #30 and #35–36 strains sequences and their respectively closest sequences at GenBank. Identical sequences were omitted for simplification.…”

“…MEGA5 software was used for calculation. The taxon samplings used were reference nu ITS1, nu ITS2 and rbc L sequences derived from recent taxonomic revisions of the Chlorella and Desmodesmus genera [ 14 , 53 , 54 ] ( S1 – S3 Tables). The maximum intraspecific distances and minimum interspecific distances obtained were computed.…”

“…Phylogenetic analyses could not be conclusive down to the species level as their DNA was amplified only with ITS region primers. Moreover, morphology did not allow species delimitation, owing to morphological criteria we could not point out, due to the phenotypic plasticity of Desmodesmus and the similarity of structures between Desmodesmus species [31, 44]. In the 18S rRNA and ITS phylogeny all sequences that clustered together into well-supported clades with the strain TAU-MAC 3410 are Desmodesmus communis [also known with the traditional name Scenedesmus quadricauda Turp.…”
