SimpleITK is a new interface to the Insight Segmentation and Registration Toolkit (ITK) designed to facilitate rapid prototyping, education and scientific activities via high level programming languages. ITK is a templated C++ library of image processing algorithms and frameworks for biomedical and other applications, and it was designed to be generic, flexible and extensible. Initially, ITK provided a direct wrapping interface to languages such as Python and Tcl through the WrapITK system. Unlike WrapITK, which exposed ITK's complex templated interface, SimpleITK was designed to provide an easy to use and simplified interface to ITK's algorithms. It includes procedural methods, hides ITK's demand driven pipeline, and provides a template-less layer. Also SimpleITK provides practical conveniences such as binary distribution packages and overloaded operators. Our user-friendly design goals dictated a departure from the direct interface wrapping approach of WrapITK, toward a new facade class structure that only exposes the required functionality, hiding ITK's extensive template use. Internally SimpleITK utilizes a manual description of each filter with code-generation and advanced C++ meta-programming to provide the higher-level interface, bringing the capabilities of ITK to a wider audience. The Insight Segmentation and Registration Toolkit (ITK) is a highly utilized open source medical imaging library providing chiefly the functionality to register, segment, and filter medical images. Although extremely powerful, ITK has a steep learning curve for users with little or no background in programming. It was for this reason that SimITK was developed. SimITK wraps ITK into the model driven engineering environment Simulink, a part of the Matlab development suite. The first released version of SimITK was a proof of concept, and demonstrated that ITK could be wrapped successfully in Simulink. In this paper a new version of SimITK is presented where ITK classes are wrapped using a fully automated process. In addition, SimITK is transitioned to successfully support ITK version 4, in order to remain current with the ITK project. SimITK includes thirty-seven image filters, twelve optimizers, and nineteen transform classes from ITK version 4 which are successfully wrapped and tested, and can be quickly and easily combined to perform medical imaging tasks. These classes were chosen to represent a broad range of usability, and to allow for greater flexibility when creating registration pipelines. SimITK has the potential to reduce the learning curve for ITK and allow the user to focus on developing workflows and algorithms. We have created a wrapper package named SimVTK that allows VTK, and third-party classes derived from VTK classes, to be seamlessly integrated with MATLAB’s Simulink interface. Our package generates a loadable Simulink module for each VTK class, which is then represented as a “block” on the Simulink canvas, and can be connected with other blocks to form a pipeline. Each block can be double-clicked to bring up a dialog box that allows introspection and control of the VTK class. After a VTK pipeline has been built, it can be run interactively from within Simulink. The outputs of the pipeline can be displayed in an interactive render window, written to a disk file, or exported to a MATLAB variable. Within Simulink, the VTK pipeline can also be connected to the ITK pipeline through the use of our SimITK package. We generate the VTK-Simulink wrapper automatically though the use of CMake build scripts, with XML as an intermediate representation of the VTK class interfaces.
