Simple Approach to Medical Grade Alumina and Zirconia Ceramics Surface Alteration via Acid Etching Treatment

Abstract: In order for bioceramics to be further used in composites and their applications, it is important to change the surface so that the inert material is ready to interact with another material. Medical grade alumina and zirconia ceramic powders have been chemically etched with three selected acidic mixtures. Powder samples were taken for characterization, which was the key to evaluating a successful surface change. Changes in morphology, together with chemical composition, were studied using scanning electron mic… Show more

“…(1) cleaning of CSs from post-industrial pollution, (2) removal of damaged cenospheres, (3) screening of cenospheres on a vibrating tower to obtain the desired grain fractions, (4) chemical surface modification by etching in Piranha solution, (5) chemical surface modification by APTES, and (6) thermal treatment. The preparation of the cenospheres was carried out based on previous investigations with alumina and zirconia surface modification [34,35]. The cenospheres were first cleaned of biological residues and sediments from the lagoons in which they were stored.…”

“…The filament was prepared using a method similar to the one described by us in our earlier work [35]. To prepare the feedstock, a twin-screw extruder was used for the compounding, while a single-screw extruder was used for the filament preparation.…”

“…The obtained results are part of a broader study on the modification of ceramic filler coatings dedicated to polymer-ceramic composites (PCC) and represent a continuation of our earlier work [40,41]. These fillers have potential applications as an input to PCCs and could be used in 3D printing for dentistry [41,42].…”

“…Good bone repair materials should not only have a high mechanical strength but also have connected micropore structures similar to those of human bones. Related research results show that porous hydroxyapatite bone repair materials with suitable numbers and sizes of pores can provide growth space for osteoblasts and blood vessels and promote rapid bone growth [ 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 ]. Porous hydroxyapatite bone ceramics have good osteogenic induction properties and enhance the capacity for bone defect repair, which is more in line with the clinical requirements for biological bone repair materials.…”
