“…The increasing use of sonography has revealed a ~--' BRITISH JOURNAL OF UROLOGY higher incidence of simple intratesticular cysts (Rifkin and Jacobs, 1983;Chang et a/., 1987;Hamm eta/., 1988;Kratzik eta/., 1988;Kratzik et a/., 1990) than that reported in earlier publications (Schmidt, 1966;Tosi and Richardson, 1975;Takihara et a/., 1982). Morphologically, the cysts are filled with a clear serous liquid with no cellular elements and lined by cylindrical epithelium.…”

“…The first case of simple testicular cyst in infants was reported by Schmidt in 1966 in a 5-monthold infant (Schmidt, 1966). The first case of simple testicular cyst in adults was reported Tosi and Richardson in 1975 in a 58-year-old man (Tosi & Richardson, 1975). From 1966 to 2004, fewer than 50 cases of simple testicular cyst were reported in total (Ceylan et al, 2004).…”

“…A simple intratesticular cyst must fulfil the following histological characteristics; it must lie within the parenchyma of the testis; it must contain clear fluid free from sperm and be surrounded by a wall lined by flat or cuboid epithelium; the wall must be separated from the tunica albuginea and neither the wall nor the parenchyma should contain teratomatous elements; the rest of the testis should show no evidence of chronic inflammation or fibrosis [5–7] (Fig. 1a).…”

“…One suggestion is that the cause may be associated with the patient's age and thus simple cysts can be divided into two main types; an infant type caused by congenital anomaly (arising from the remnants of the Müllerian and Wolffian ducts); and an adult type caused by trauma (e.g. as in Barach's dog [4]), or infection, where it is believed that an infective process may cause occlusion resulting to a cystic tumour (gonorrhoea infecting the vas deferens and epididymis) [5–8]. However, on reviewing the literature, many of the cases did not occur after trauma or infection and therefore their aetiology is unknown.…”
