Simplification and aggregation strategies applied for factory analysis in conceptual phase using simulation

Abstract: Despite that simulation possesses an establish background and offers tremendous promise for designing and analyzing complex production systems, manufacturing industry has been less successful in using it as a decision support tool, especially in the conceptual phase of factory design. This paper presents how simplification and aggregation strategies are incorporated in a modeling, simulation and analysis tool, with the aim of supporting decision making in conceptual phase. Conceptual modeling is guided by a fr… Show more

“…They validate it by comparing their simulator to a flexible manufacturing system. Moris et al (2008) identify the need to focus on improvement of modelling features and estimation of distributions for production data. Yang et al (2008) identify the need to integrate process simulation, evaluation platform, and management information systems.…”

“…Lee et al (2011) state that as the production lines are complex it is necessary to choose/develop models or modelling techniques carefully. Moris et al (2008) conclude that, while creating a computer simulation model, focus on the improvement of modelling features and accuracy in distribution for production data is necessary. Yang et al (2008) identify the need to integrate process simulation, evaluation platform, and management information systems.…”

“…Most of the present research is in bits and pieces instead of developing a complete SL for LM. Moris et al. (2008) have identified the need to integrate process simulation, evaluation platform and management information systems.…”

“…Zeigler (1976), Innis and Rexstad (1983), Yin and Zhou (1989) and Robinson (1994) all discuss methods of model simplification specific to simulation modelling. Only two publications were identified in the literature review that covered the topic of model simplification: Moris et al (2008) and Koch and Tolujew (2013). A panel discussion at the 2018 Winter Simulation Conference, led by Durk-Jouke van der Zee, addresses model simplification from an educational perspective.…”
